Academics

LSD is a Louisiana Special School that offers appropriate curriculum instruction according to students' individual needs and abilities. Students from 3-21 years of age attend classes taught by certified teachers. Our ancillary staff includes a librarian, speech therapists and paraeducators. Our facilities include libraries, computer labs, career/technical education labs and shops, and an impressive physical education complex.

LSD educates the whole child in an atmosphere of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS). Our learning spaces are filled with qualified instructional staff and appropriate educational materials. We are especially fortunate to have interactive whiteboard technology in all of our classrooms, along with filtered Internet access and an extensive library of software and other instructional resources.

High school students are offered on-the-job training both on and off campus. The school provides many other educational experiences aimed at helping students acquire independent living skills.

LSD students participate in the same state mandated high-stakes testing as their hearing peers.Students who pass the Graduate Exit Exam (GEE) and earn the required number of Carnegie units receive a State Diploma. Other students may earn a State Certificate of Achievement or a State-Approved Skills Certificate.
